WEEK I   29-30 April 2008

An inauspicious start to the season, with no games being played in the north of the county. Despite the leaden skies some cricket

was possible further south, with the Penrith club benefiting the most, with the second and third teams gaining winning draws.

The Academy side went one better a day later, winning at Caldbeck, with Mark Cameron scoring the first century of the

season.  Wigton had mixed fortunes, with the second team losing to Carleton off the penultimate ball of the match, but the

third team garnering five points on Sunday on the same ground. Another close match saw Temple Sowerby prevail at home

against Lowther; in a position of authority they almost relinquished the points before grabbing the initiative back, taking four

wickets for six runs, giving them a winning margin of just two runs. Last years Premiership champions also benefited, being

the only victors in the division, with a comfortable win at newly promoted Edenhall.

Neil writes: In the opening game of the season at Tynefield Park, Caldbeck won the toss and elected to put the home side in to bat. Penrith made steady progress with all the early batsmen spending good time at the wicket, in particular John Ridley who top scored with 66 not out and “Jack” Robinson with a controlled innings of 37. Penrith made 184-6 with Steve Watson the pick of the Caldbeck bowlers with 2 for 27. In response, some tight bowling from the John Iniff and Duncan Fraser restricted the Caldbeck batsmen who struggled to find the boundaries necessary to keep up with the run rate. However after loss of a couple of quick wickets. Steve Watson and Mike Wilson set about rebuilding the innings and some big hitting by Watson and latterly Clarke, saw Caldbeck close at 176-5 with Penrith securing a winning draw.
